The Muslim protest in Sydney at the weekend was an absolute disgrace.
The ugly and violent scenes should never be allowed to be repeated.
The CBD had to be virtually shut down and why? So these extremists could carry on like the hooligans they are.
Apart from anything else, this radical element gives the Muslim religion a shocking name, and most decent people have found their behaviour to be abhorrent.
And just what were they thinking using children to carry placards calling for all those who insult the prophet to be beheaded.
There are plenty of Australians who are opposed to the Muslim religion in general, and this type of incident just adds to their bigotry.
As stated many times before in this newspaper, no one in this country should be denied the right to protest, after all, it is their democratic right.
But when it descends into an all-out riot, then the perpetrators should face the full force of the law.
Thankfully, several offenders have already been arrested, and both senior police and our leading politicians have been quick to condemn their actions.
The rally was sparked by an internet video mocking Islam, and that shouldn’t be tolerated, either.
Nevertheless, there is no exuse for the violent behaviour we have all just witnessed.
Muslim leaders must come out as well and voice their disapproval to the rally organisers.
Our police deserve better than turning up for work, only to be bombarded with rocks and lumps of wood.
That simply isn’t on.
If those charged are convicted then they should be made an example of.
Jail time is the only answer, as this type of behaviour just has to be stamped out.
We’ve all seen it before overseas, and we certainly don’t need it to become the norm in this country.
All in all, the riot was absolutely appalling.
