Guyra hockey has enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in recent times with player numbers well up and the club being able to field a team in every senior grade of the Hockey New England competition.
In the womens comp 1st grade and 4th grade both narrowly missed out on a top 4 finish but a huge congratulations still needs to go to both these teams for their effort this year! The club has never fielded a 1st grade womens side before and for the team to end up in 5th place was a great building block for the years to come. Special mention must go to Kate Stanford for getting this team together and than organising everything!
The 4th grade team also needs to be congratulated on a great effort in what was most of the teams first year in womens competition. Most of this team is still eligible to play under 16s but lack of numbers saw them having to step up and step up they did! Every player in this team has improved immensely throughout the season and had a blast at the same time! I also want to make special mention of the parents of these players who sat through the freezing night time games cheering the team on although if they had of been on the field with the players they would’ve been plenty warm enough (a point to consider for next year!) This team really started to crack at the end of the year beating the top team in the final round and only missed out on a semi’s spot by 2 points! Hopefully these players will all be back next year!
3rd grade womens had a fairly slow start to the season copping a few touch ups in the first couple of rounds before starting to build then really fire at the right end of the season. The team managed to finish in 3rd place and took on United in the semi (beating them a whooping 6-1!) than Flamingoes Pink in the final last week where they managed a 3 nil win to put them through to the grandfinal against Harlies this weekend! It will be a tough game but I believe the team has what it takes to take out the title!
2nd grade has had an absolutely cracker of a year! This team was only formed last year and after bowing out in the semi’s came back more determined this season! A couple of new faces and the expertise and drive from coach Anthony Bull has seen this team really set the benchmark in 2nd grade competition for 2012! We managed to complete the season undefeated and scored 95 goals whilst having only 10 scored against us! That’s a pretty solid effort team! We finished the season as minor premiers 16 points clear from 2nd placed United a team we have had the most trouble with all season. Playing the semi the team came out a bit nervous but got into the swing of the game fairly quickly putting a lot of pressure on the United defence but a goal just seemed to elude us for the first half. After a half time talk the team came back out and immediately were back up United’s end and were rewarded finally with a goal courtesy of Tegan Mendes. The game became more even after that with the ball exchanging from end to end. United had a couple of short corners but couldn’t get a clean shot off thanks to the great defensive work from backs and good old Wally (Alyssa) in goals. The game remained tight and fast. Guyra than delivered the final blow grabbing a short corner right on the full time bell and were rewarded with another goal to bring the final score to 2 nil and the team straight through to the grandfinal. United then went on the win the final so we will play them again this coming weekend.
It would be great to see as many Guyra supporters down at the hockey complex (behind Sport UNE) as possible on Saturday! 2nd grade will hit off at 2pm sharp with 3rd grade following immediately after that. There will also be a players/supporters bus leaving from the top pub at 12oclock and all are welcome to come. Just need to put your name down with Aimee Waters on 0428225027 to reserve your seat. There will be a bar at the grounds so dress up in as much white and green as you can and come along to cheer the women on!!!!
