I AM writing in regards to your article titled “No mother or unborn child deserves the risk of a home birth”.
This article is full of fear-based information not supported by any statistics and just using one case in the UK to support it’s ‘opinion’ by two men who have never given birth.
Let’s not forget that many deaths and injuries occur in hospital too at the hands of obstetricians and midwives.
Home birth has been proven safe for low risk women over and over again with many studies and hospitals are even now taking on home birth programs (like Sunshine Hospital and Casey Hospital in Melbourne) with great outcomes.
Home birth numbers have doubled in Australia in the past decade alone.
Maybe we should start to ask ourselves why are more women turning to home birth and start looking at what is so wrong in our hospital systems that even high risk women are turning to home birth?
If obstetricians (and ethicists) spent more time looking at that issue instead of attacking mothers who only want the best for themselves and their babies, then maybe we would open up more choices for women in childbirth that would meet everyone’s needs?
