SPECIAL-needs children in Melton will be given the chance to enjoy more social activities thanks to a new community volunteer program.
Extended Families, which supports families of children with a disability, is preparing to launch a program, dubbed Live Your Community, in Melton. Volunteers will provide friendship and mentor children through sport and other social events.
Extended Families volunteer co-ordinator Leila McConnell says the program will be launched in the next few months.
It will allow special-needs children to experience activities they might not otherwise have access to.
“Volunteers are able to offer a hand of support to families with an already-full plate,” Ms McConnell said.
Melton families and volunteers are being encouraged to express their interest. The program has been given a boost with Melton Council and Collingwood Football Club providing almost $5000 to supervise a volunteer recruitment program.
As part of its regular grants program, the council provides funding of up to $10,000 to new groups and organisations. Earlier this month, it awarded $93,000 for programs run by 24 local organisations, including The Gap youth drop-in centre, cancer charity The Orange Pigeon and Melton Christian Churches.
Extended Families will hold an open day from noon-5pm on September 25 at Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre, corner of Calder Park Drive and Omarama Way.
