The current public submission process, calling for submissions regarding the Old Castlemaine Gaol, is both perplexing and unusual.
Why did council not ask for comments, ideas and submissions prior to beginning a commercial sale process for this important heritage asset?
Council is constantly saying the community was consulted. Well, a great many people do not feel consulted.
A small notice in the tenders section of council notices, is not sufficient.
At the very least, a public information session should have been called.
Had it been, it would surely have been well-attended by a wide variety of community interest groups and individuals.
Recent meetings held by Friends of the Old Gaol have demonstrated this.
So council is asking the community to comment now, at the very last minute, on the verge of caretaker period prior to council elections.
An interesting process indeed.
Submissions close at 5pm on Wednesday, September 19.
Let’s hope lots of people contribute their thoughts.
