MOUNT Isa City Council Mayor Tony McGrady has welcomed changes to the Local Government Act, saying it includes “a little bit of power to the people”.
Cr McGrady said he discovered many changes on his return to local government and lamented that most were not for the better.
“The local community elect their mayor and councillors but over the years the power and influence of the elected members have decreased and the power of the council officials and the state government has massively increased,” he said.
But Cr McGrady said he was pleased to see the new reforms to help cut red tape.
“This bill before the parliament changes that,” he said.
He claims it’s one of the biggest reforms in a generation.
