On the weekendAugust 6 and 7 a contingent of Guyra polocrosse members travelled to Young to represent the Northern New England Zone at the State Zone championships.
The sub-juniors- Tim, Abbey, Jack, Alec, and Sophie won all their first three games which put them into the championship round and the final on Sunday afternoon against South West Slopes. The teams were very evenly matched and at the end of 6 chukkas it was 10 all. This took us to golden point time- the first to score a goal took the title. In what was a tense few minutes and some good team work, South West Slopes scored the winning goal.
Whilst there was a lot of disappointment the kids did should be very proud of themselves. As the president of National Polocrosse said “It was a fine display of polocrosse”. I think the sub-juniors also need congratulating on their fine display of sportsmanship shown across the weekend.
A big congratulations to Tim Finlayson whose horse won champion stock horse in the Sub juniors.
Our juniors (Sam Brett, Sam Finlayson and Jock Grills) also showed great skill and determination in their game against North West plains who were the hot favourites. What we thought may have been an easy win for the opposition, New England went down by only 2 goals. Once again a very close game and another great display of polocrosse skills.
Our ladies, Jess Grills and Megan Vidler had to play hard all weekend with some very tough completion. The semi-final saw them go down by one goal and this then put them in the A grade completion which also meant another final. Unfortunately the girls went down in this game. Well done on their efforts.
The men’s team with Jamie Vidler, also found themselves in the last game of the weekend which was the championship final. Always a very competitive final, they played South west Slopes and although it was a great game of polocrosse they also missed a win.
On behalf of the club we would like to congratulate these players. Not only were they selected to represent their zone, they proved how competitive and committed the Guyra polocrosse club.
Sub Juniors Sophie McKemey, Jack McKemey, Tim Finlayson, Abby Finlayson, and Alec Grills
