The men who competed on the day.THE Myall Coast Veteran Golfers have set a challenge for other clubs in the region to match or surpass the amount it raised during its inaugural Prostate Cancer Awareness Day.
At a golfing day last Thursday at Hawks Nest Golf Club, the club raised $3100 towards fighting the disease.
“It [prostate cancer] is a bit close to home for a lot of people,” club treasurer Peter Nealon said.
One hundred and thirty-four golfers attended the event.
The players had only completed 15 out of the 18 holes when an afternoon thunderstorm stopped play.
Because of this no winner was determined but Mr Nealon said the real winner of the day was the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance.
Back at the clubhouse the golfers were given a presentation about prostate cancer by the alliance.
Through raffles and an auction of donated items $2600 was raised and this was topped off by a $500 donation from the Tea Gardens Country Club.
Mr Nealon said many businesses supported the day by providing auction items and food.
