Guyra Ghosts finished off a fantastic season with a victory in their Grand Final against the Baa Baas last weekend, making them the 3rd Grade Minor and Major Premiers for 2012. Guyra topped the table after winning all but three games this season and had a narrow win over the Armidale Blues to secure a Grand Final spot.
The Grand Final game showed the commitment and dedication of the players, with the Ghosts giving it their all until the last minute. Matt Turner played one of his best games of the season, scoring the first try for Guyra after making a spectacular break and beating Baa Baas defense to the line. The conversion from the sideline was unsuccessful, giving Guyra a narrow lead of 5-0.
Coach Jim Lenehan scored the next try for Guyra, following a mighty effort by the forwards. Conversion was successful and the bringing the score to 12-0 to Guyra. Late in the game the Baa Baas fought back with a try of their own, but it was too late to have any impact on the game, the final score being 12-5 to Guyra.
Brodie Baxter, who was unable to play in the Grand Final as a result of injury, still shared in the success by being awarded the overall 3rd Grade Best and Fairest. His influence this season has not gone unnoticed and has always been a valuable team member.
Thanks to the crowd who came along to support the Ghosts and for the little ghosts who dressed up for the occasion, it makes a big difference to the boys on the field to know that their town is behind them. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for their continued support.
