BEAUMARIS will take on University Blacks for the VAFA Premier B title at Sportscover Arena on Saturday.
The Sharks won through to the decider after defeating St Kevin’s by 28 points in the preliminary final on Saturday. The win also ensured them promotion to Premier A grade next season.
Uni Blacks, St Kevin’s and Beaumaris were the best three teams in the Premier B competition for much of the year but the Sharks were the better side when it mattered most.
They jumped out to a 28-point lead by quarter-time on Saturday, kicking seven goals to two. St Kevin’s hit back hard in the second to trail by 14 at half-time. But Beaumaris won the match in the premiership quarter, scoring seven goals to three to take an unassailable 38-point lead into the last term.
St Kevin’s never seriously challenged Beaumaris in the last.
Beaumaris coach Jason Mifsud said the win was the result of hard work.
“We were really good early,” he said. “Our defensive pressure caused a number of turnovers which we capitalised on. We knew our conditioning and fitness was going to hold us in good stead.”
Sam McBain was best on ground with four goals for Beaumaris, while Rob Cathcart and Matt Duggan played well.
Mifsud said they were confident of causing an upset in the grand final, having beaten University Blacks by two points in round eight, and losing by 37 in round 15, when they kicked 15 behinds from 21 scoring shots.
“We kicked really poorly in the game we lost to them,” Mifsud said. “We really respect them, and they’re very well-drilled, but we don’t hold any fear of them.’’
