FOUR regional municipalities in central Victoria have decided to make alternative public holiday arrangements in place of Melbourne Cup day.
The Hepburn Shire will have a full day holiday in the townships of Clunes, Creswick, Smeaton and Newlyn for the Ballarat Show day on November 9.
The Macedon Ranges Shire will have a full day holiday in the postcode areas of 3444, 3446, 3458 and the towns of Cadello and Carlsruhe for Kyneton Cup day on November 7.
The City of Greater Bendigo will have a full day holiday in all areas west of the Campaspe River to celebrate Bendigo Cup day on October 31.
The Buloke Shire will have a full day holiday in Wycheproof for the town’s Agricultural Pastoral Show Day on October 17.
Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher announced the change to the Public Holidays Act on Thursday.
She said the government had delivered on its pre-election promise to restore the right of regional councils to choose their own public holidays.
“I am pleased to see regional councils have used these new laws to support and celebrate their local race days and agricultural shows,” she said.
Ms Asher said the economic flow-on from this new approach would provide small businesses with a range of benefits.
“Local businesses and producers can participate in their community’s big day, showcasing local produce, skills and enterprise,” she said.
